THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RAZOR BUMPS AND DARK SPOTS

Sometimes, it just doesn’t seem fair – you’ve successfully managed to get rid of those irritating, painful razor bumps. Now, when you look in the mirror, they’ve been replaced by unattractive dark marks or spots. You’re not imagining it – these skin conditions are interrelated.

Razor bumps occur after shaving – tender, inflamed bumps that are visible on your skin. These may become infected, causing you more discomfort and concern. Read more about razor bumps, what causes them and recommended treatment. At the same time as these bumps occur, your skin reacts by producing more colour, or pigment in the affected skin cells. As a result, when the razor bumps or rash has cleared up, dark marks or spots (pigmentation) remain. These patchy, darkened areas of skin are referred to as uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation.

There’s a 2-pronged approach to managing this condition: •Firstly, manage the razor bump situation. You cannot prevent bumps from occurring, but you can treat the symptoms effectively and maintain good skin health to help reduce the recurrence. This minimises the discolouration and skin damage caused by the bumps. •Secondly, manage the dark marks or pigmentation with purpose-made, skin-friendly, quality products. These target problematic pigmentation and restore your skin’s natural, even tone. The inclusion of sun protection is a necessity to deliver the long term benefits you desire.

It’s possible to treat both conditions simultaneously. We suggest a morning routine dedicated to tackling uneven skin tone ( ensuring that your moisturiser includes SPF), followed by an evening grooming routine dedicated to managing razor bumps.

Don’t be tempted by quick-fix fading solutions – these often create further problems and skin damage. Rather invest in a skincare routine with reliable products that, with sustained use, will yield the desired results.
